Instructions   14" x 18" piece of linen (or suitable cotton fabric) in white, cream, or natural. Six-strand embroidery floss in the following colors: (1) Black, (2) Light Brown, (3) Medium Brown, (4) Dark Brown, (5) Light Green, (6) Dark Green, (7)Yellow, (8) Medium Blue, (9) Purple, (10) Red, (11) Orange, (12) Light Blue.
Notes

Stitches used: C - Chain Stitch; D - Lazy Daisy Stitch; F - Ferm Stitch; K - French Knot; L - Long and Short Stitch; O - Outline Stitch; R - Running Stitch; S - Satin Stitch.

Use 3 strands of embroidery floss throughout.

Work mane and tail on the mare in outline stitch; on the foal in long and short stitch, eyes of both in black satin stitch. The bodies of both are embroidered in long and short stitch, running one color into the next along the color separation line.

Embroidery flowers in lazy daisy stitch with french knot centers, leaves in lazy daisy stitch, and stems in outline stitch. Work larger leaves in satin stitch and ferns in fern stitch. Do grass in long and short stitch. Work water in long and short stitch and bushes in outline stitch, branches of tree in satin stitch and leaves in lazy daisy stitch. Outline clouds in medium blue, and work inner line of clouds in yellow. Make upper part of sky coloring in light blue running stitch and lower part (surrounding mare) in a blend of light blue, yellow and a bit of orange to resemble a sunset.

Work frame of picture in red chain stitch.

To finish picture, cut a piece of cardboard to fit frame. Stretch picture over cardboard and hold in place by stitching back and forth from one side to the other across the back; or glue edges down with gummed paper. After stretching, place in frame, then cover back with a second piece of cardboard. Hold in place with small nails. Paste paper over back of frame.
